Brother A3 grabs A3 paper but NOT A4

My Brother MFC-J5910DW has always been temperamental. It will grab A3 paper and print fine, inc. duplex. A4 paper mostly jams or gets stuck on the rollers. Looking in the back, the A4 tends NOT to get past the "upper" rollers. As these are exactly the ones that do grab the A3 I am very puzzled ( and frustrated). Needless to say, Brother Support was no help. I did try all their FAQ suggestions.
Any help much appreciated.

Do not use alcohol to clean rollers. Alcohol hardens rubber rollers, which must remain soft & pliable.

Be sure paper width guides in paper tray are adjusted with slight clearance from paper.
Guides must not touch paper, otherwise creates drag on paper
Advise
