brother j172w check connection problem

Hi, I have had the 172 multifunction printer for 8 months now and its worked a treat until I recently bought a new computer. For some reason, the printer part still works fine and prints from all devices in the house (all on wifi, printer included), but it won't scan. If I try to scan a document to file, to image or to email, I get a 'check connection' error.....BUT, if I scan to user pc, then it works fine. A large file, .BMP @ 2.4mb, but then i just reduce by using editing software.
Any thoughts on why it will print and scan on one function, but fails to find a connection with the other scan options?
