Canon MP480 giving 5200 error messsage

My MP480 stopped copying about 2 months ago but was still printing from my computer. Now it only gives an ERROR 5200 message. Canon tech support said removing and reinstalling the cartridges might do it and that replacing them with "genuine Canon" cartridges might solve it, but otherwise the printer is toast. Removing and installing the old cartridges (whicha are refills) made no difference, and I hate to pay for new cartridges when the machine likely won't work anyway.
Is it tiem to give up and buy a new printer?
