Epson ET-8550 out put tray won't open

I haven't used my printer in a few months as I was taking a sabbatical from work, and when I went to use it this week the output tray suddenly stopped working. When I press the button it starts to come out for a moment and then stops and goes back in. Help, please!

I think the tray will automatically extend when the print job is sent. Mine behaves the same way if I press the 'output tray' button. I think it's function is to close the tray after printing.
