Epson xp820 only uses photo black

My Epson xp820 will only use the photo black cartridge when printing. I have an XL regular black cartridge and it hasn't used any ink at all. This is the third photo black I have had to replace. Cannot find anything in manual or online to set it to use the black ink during regular printing. What do I need to do?
