HP 8600 problem with printer or ink system

My old 8600 Pro suddenly quit printing, with the message:
There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn the printer off, then on. If the problem persists contact HP.
Of course it is long out of warranty. Yes, I have replaced the ink cartridges (but with non-HP cartridges). Yes, I have turned it off, unpl it and then back on. Still not working.
Suggestions?
