Start by downloading and using the HP Scan Doctor software to see if it can find anything.

If that doesn't resolve your problems, try the following:
(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
--Press the back button on the main screen 5 times in a row. You may have to repeat this step to get the hidden HP technicians menu to show.
--Once it shows, navigate to the RESETS section. choose Semi-Full Reset
--Let it perform the reset completely. Including it turning itself off or restarting itself.
(3) If the printer restarted on it's on with the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.
(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 printer won’t copy from the platen glass and prints out blank pages, while the scan bar moves but does not light up, follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:

1. Check the Scanner Glass and Document

  1. Clean the Scanner Glass: Dust or smudges on the scanner glass can interfere with the scanning process. Clean the glass gently with a soft, lint-free cloth and a glass cleaner. Avoid using too much liquid.
  2. Ensure Proper Placement: Make sure the document is placed correctly on the platen glass. Align it with the guides or markings on the glass.

2. Inspect the Scanner Light

  1. Verify Scanner Light: The scanner light (usually a small bulb or LED) should illuminate when the scan function is activated. If it does not light up, it might be faulty.
  2. Check for Obstructions: Ensure there are no obstructions or debris around the scanner light that might be preventing it from functioning properly.

3. Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Power Cycle the Printer: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset internal components and resolve temporary issues.

4. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers

  1. Update Drivers: Outdated or corrupt drivers can cause various issues. Visit the HP support website, download the latest drivers for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720, and install them on your computer.
  2. Reinstall Drivers: If updating doesn’t help, uninstall the existing printer drivers from your computer. Go to "Device Manager," find your printer under "Printers," right-click it, and select "Uninstall device." Restart your computer and reinstall the latest drivers.

5. Check for Firmware Updates

  1. Update Firmware: Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. Visit the HP support website or use the HP Smart app to check for and install any available firmware updates.

6. Examine Ink Cartridges

  1. Verify Ink Levels: Even though you’ve checked the ink cartridges, ensure they are properly installed and have sufficient ink. Replace any low or empty cartridges.
  2. Clean Print Head: Use the printer’s maintenance menu to clean the print head. This can help if the issue is related to poor print quality or clogged nozzles.

7. Perform Printer Diagnostics

  1. Run Printer Troubleshooter: Use the built-in printer troubleshooter tool available through the HP Smart app or your computer’s settings. This can help identify and resolve common issues.
  2. Check Error Codes: If the printer displays any error codes or messages, consult the user manual or HP’s support website for information on what they mean and how to address them.

8. Consult HP Support

  1. Contact Support: If you’ve tried all of the above steps and the issue persists, contact HP customer support for further assistance. There may be a hardware issue that requires professional repair or replacement.
By following these troubleshooting steps, you should be able to diagnose and hopefully resolve the issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 not copying from the platen glass and printing blank pages. If all else fails, HP support can provide more advanced help or repair options.
