However, as soon as the second, more intense sound begins, the printer shuts itself off.

I'm guessing there's a larger power draw associated with that more intense noise and perhaps the power supply isn't up to it -- bad capacitors?

Or possibly an issue with whatever motor is making the louder sound.

However, I would appreciate any thoughts others have.  It's possible I'm on the wrong track.

This printer is from late 2008, so worn out caps seems possible.

I'd just get something new, but new printers don't seem to support the AppleTalk protocol any more and I have some legacy machines on my home network I want to continue supporting.  Heck, manufacturers don't seem to list which network protocols they support any more.   It's frustrating.
