Printer head cleaning

My Epson Stylus Photo 1400 has started to clean the heads after every 1/2 prints - the last time I printed 4 photos and the heads were cleaned 3 times. This is obviously wasting a lot of ink, and is expensive. Is there a program available to reset the printer.
