Printer stating brand new cartridges low/empty.

I have a Epson NX105 and just bought brand new genuine cartridges(paid almost $50 for these). I installed them and tried to print something and at first would just print blank pages and then would only print Yellow. Now all of sudden the epson utility is stating that the yellow is empty and black is low, to replace them..I don't know what i can do to fix this. Any ideas? Thanks.

Did printer sit for long period without cartridges?
Did printer sit long period with empty cartridges?
Did printer sit for long period (weeks) between print jobs?
Were new cartridges installed immediately after removal from sealed package?
Printer may be experiencing ink clogging or clogged print head.

Thank you for the reply. Yes this printer hasn't been used in a long time and has sat with empty cartridges in it for well over a year. I aqcuired the printer from a relative who didn't want to shell out money for the expensive ink so i went and bought new cartridges finally, i installed them a following the proper instructions. I will check out the link you posted. Thanks again.
