Samsung C1860FW Phantom Paper Jam Tray 1 Between Each Sheet

I've received a Samsung C1860FW that had a torn sheet in it (the sprung plate at the bottom of the paper tray had been unlocked and it was tearing two holes in the paper at the pins). I've found one loose fragment of paper but can't see anything else in the paper path. It will only print one page at a time then says there's a paper jam in tray 1, sliding the tray out and in again will allow it to print the next page, then repeating that process again to continue. Does anyone know what the sensor arrangement is in this printer that could be leading to this behaviour?
