xerox phaser 6500: no reaction in Service Mode and ESS

Hello,
i am trying to enter the Service Mode and ESS on my phaser 6500. holding down arrow-keys while starting the printer brings me to the menu "Service Mode and ESS". but from there i can just do nothing. pressing any key results in nothing, the keys have now function, just the words "Service Mode and ESS" appear.
does anyone has an idea why/ what i am doing wrong?

... I don't know why but today it is working and i can use the keys to scroll through the menue...
